Evinrude shift cable problems

When you hook up your shift cables to the motor is it suppose to be in gear or in neutral? I have a 85 40hp Evinrude. When I tried hooking up the cables I would get either only forward or only reverse or neither one of them. I can't seem to get it to work with forward and reverse at the same time. If anyone has any suggestions for me please help!

Re: Evinrude shift cable problems

Put the motor in neutral by hand, put the shift lever in neutral. The adjustment knob on the cable end needs to fit into the keeper now without moving the motors shift linkage.
Are you sure you have the shift cable hooked to the shilf linkage and not the throttle cable.

Put your control in neutral, now move it forward. The first cable to move is the shift cable.

DHP
