Forward gear only after full throttle, it slips into Neutral and winds at a high RPM

Which motor are we talking about here?

You are positive it is slipping into neutral and the revving is not the prop hub spinning?

Whoops I thought I put that in there. Its an Evinrude 25. Yeah no prop spin (thats what I thought at first too) bc I can see the shift lever fall out of Forward and into Neutral. It's just barely in neutral at this point because I can see it (the lever) vibrating where it's riding on the teeth of a gear.

What year motor? If you hold the lever in forward at WOT, does it stay in gear?

It's a '79. Yeah it stays in gear when I'm holding pressure on the lever in Forward. I even put a heavy spring on it to connect the lever to a forward piece to prevent it from falling back into Neutral position. Although just a temporary fix, it worked (but I have to connect/disconnect when shifting from F-N-R).
