Re: Evinrude Speed Twin

Welcome to Iboats, academyman!

If that's a speeditwin, it ought to be a 28hp. It should have a fiberglass & metal cowl that completely comes off with a little lever and door in the front.
But those numbers don't make much sense for that. Could you describe it a bit and where that number came from?

EDITED: Oh, there it is. Model 6039, serial number 50677 is a 1950 22.5hp SpeediTwin you have there. You can see most the specifications for it over at the Old OMC Site:

http://www.old-omc.de/e_1950/evin_1950.html

I belive those used to be raced. Iboats member Chinewalker will know for sure.

Thanks Paul-- my uncle used to race this on the Detroit River. There is a spare carb and prob in an old apple barrel that came with it.

Yeah, the 6039 Speeditwins were raced for a few years, mostly in marathon type races. The Mercury Mark 30H obsoleted them in 1956. Earlier versions of the Speeditwin (pre-WWII) were much better racing motors and some models were actually built for racing. The post WWII Speeditwins were service motors that happened to be raced, and would certainly not be categorized as racing motors.

That said, they are good, solid motors. Most of them, if stored properly and in decent condition, won't take much to fire off. I've got one myself - planes my 14-foot tin can with ease and barks a bit when I pull that circular plug out of the middle of the exhaust tank...

- Scott

From that 1950's brochure:

Where high speed is required on good sized boats…or ability to handle heavy loads day after day…week in and week out…there is no substitute for power!

Speeditwin gives you power…22.5 certified horsepower. Thrilling power that swiftly lifts big runabouts into planning speed…power that’s equally at home on roomy cruiser or heavy work-boat…capable power that’s known and respected everywhere.

Love it!
