I am working on a 1946 Evinrude Sportsman 2 HP outboard model 4409 . The coil checks bad and needs replacement . Can I use the "OMC coil fix" by removing the windings from the common 2-40 HP coil and applying them to the laminates from this motor? I measured the laminate size that would go through the center of the coil and it is not 7/16ths , but 3/8ths of a inch, so it would not be a tight fit on the laminates. Thanks in advance for any help

Does that mag have the magnet rotating in the center? If it does, those coils are pretty dependable. There are lots of used ones around.

You might be able to use a coil with 7/16 laminate.Go to oddjob motors and read the wico coilhttp://oddjobmotors.com/tt1_replacewico_coil.htm

I retested the coil this morning , there is no continuity between the plug wire and any of the solder connections [everything was checked at the solder on the coil body] So I think this one is bad. I went to the oddjob website and it says that the winding replacement fix will only work with 7/16 laminates . These are 3/8ths . So I guess I need to find a replacement coil. I have my eye on E-bay of coarse, but so far only new ones listed at 80$

Anyone know the part number for the coil on the Evinrude Sportsman?[perhaps a schematic/exploited view] I found a coil for a Johnson HD -25 and think it will work but would like to check.

I'm not so sure the Sportsman has the maverick spark suppressor, but ?? With the spark suppressor, the ground wire at the plate is not actually grounded, but goes through the suppressor. You must consider that when doing continuity tests.

I'm sending out two coils plus other parts this morning for $30, including postage. Couldn't get a better offer. Sorry, I don't have any more. Yes the HD coils will work.

Just for anyone following this post the OMC replacement as described on oddjobmotors website will not work for these coils. the OD of the original coils is smaller than the OMCs , so they are too big to fit on the armature plate.
