I am new to this board, so bear with me. I have a 1971 Evinrude Sportwin 9.5. The guy I got it from threw it in with a boat I bought. All he could tell me was that he "burned it up." I started fiddling with it and this is what I found: I hooked it up to the gas tank, it started after about ten pulls or so. It ran good out of water for about fifteen seconds before I shut it off [I was amazed that it started, I didn't think it would so I wasn't prepared!] I put a bucket of water under it and could not get it to crank at all. All it would do was spit and pop. I checked the compression: <5 on the top, 35 on bottom. I pulled the head, checked the cylinders, they didn't look too bad, so I replaced the head gasket and gained about 30-35 lbs on both cylinders. Now I have 30 on top, 65 on bottom. still not great, but it was running good and firing/starting on the first pull in the barrel. I decided to take it out, and when I did: Ran great [wouldn't put my 14' jon on plane, but with low compression, I expected that]; started slowly losing power, so I idled it down to swap tanks [my primary tank was almost empty...another oversight on my part]. When I got it to idle, it died. Now in the barrel, it would idle all day long, go figure. After it died, all it would do was spit and pop. Didn't start again until about 3 hours later sitting in my driveway, out of the water. Again, I figured it was kaput, so I wasn't expecting it to start. I immediately shut it down and ended the night. Also, I noticed some nasty looking sludge in the driveway under the prop before I cranked it up. It was a brownish colored muck that was really thick and muddy looking. It was dripping onto the prop from a small hole on the underside of the plane fin, and also oozing out of what I suppose is the exhaust on this motor? [triangular shaped piece that comes down behind the prop, open on the back side and on the prop side it has a small screen on a tube pickup, I assume is for the water pump?] I don't know much about outboards or specifically this motor, any help would be greatly appreciated.
