I just picked up above aforementioned motor.....
Model 9822E.....
Serial # E06805
The woman said it has sat for awhile.....
She said that it had leaked some oil from sitting....
I could only assume it was a bad seal in the gearcase....
Anyway I bought it.....($30).....
Lo & behold, when I get it home & sit it on my gillplate, it does leak oil out of a small weeep hole at the bottom of the cavitation plate.....
I'm not an outboard guy, but it was way clean & definately not siezed & had good compression......
How hard is it to reseal this little beast?
Hopefully not as bad as an Alpha......
Where to gat a service manual?
Are parts available?
What is OMC, 'C'?
It looks like regular oil.....
Or is it a chunk of shiite & I wasted my money?
Any & all input appreciated........:)

I like the 9.5. They run well with a little care. Most of the parts are available at Sea-Way.com in Seattle.

Parts manuals are on line at:

http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e

The oil you see may well be unburned oil from the fuel mix. [50:1 87 or 89 Octane to TCW-3 oil].

The drain under the a/v plate is to keep water from standing.

Drain the carburetor float bowl and clean it before running the motor.

You can usually find a OMC service manual on Ebay. 1968-1973 are pretty much the same - Johnson or Evinrude paint and decals are different.

The gearcase oil is high viscosity.

1968
kencook.com for a service manual
Print your own parts manual from johnson.com, click on Parts & Accessories, then Literature, then Engine Diagrams. You'll figure it out from there. They'll ask for your e-mail, you can leave it blank.
Many parts still available, many right here on iboats.
Type C is now HiVis. Lots of marine gearlubes work.
The gearcase leak is probably the shiftshaft O-ring, but you have to take it off and completely apart anyhow. Reseal the whole thing and put in a new impeller.
Heck of a price! I'll give you $31. ;)

Describe the oil a bit and maybe we can help you figure out if it's fuel/oil mix or gearcase oil.

Yellow to milky colored and you're looking at gearcase lube for sure. Unburned fuel-oil mix would be dark black and sooty. Time for a seal kit. Fortunately, those are pretty easy LUs to work on.

Thanks, it was not milky, but it was enough to not be residue......
Is there a kit for this?
I assume it needs an impeller too....
Is it worth fixin'?....

It's absolutely worth fixing. Y'know when I did mine I just bought all the parts individually. Dunno if there's a proper "kit", but there's only a handful of seals.

Use the Mercury lube. Down the road, you might want to try 100% Synthetic.

Re: Evinrude Sportwin 9.5 Questions......

I don't have a manual yet.....
Upon initial inspection.....
Well, please don't tell me I will have to remove the upper cowling, if I do it almost looks like a complete disassembly......
The only upside ( if there is one)..is that it VERY clean.....
Is it as bad as it looks?...:(

It looks as though there is a lot of diassembly involved just to get to the cowling off to get at impeller & gearcase.....
Am I wrong?.....

To remove the lower leg?

Just the four bolts above the cavitation plate and remove the shift linkage. Takes all of 5 minutes.

Hmmm.....OK......
So there is no need to mess with the cowling at all?.....:)

1. Remove the four bolts.
2. Let the LU drop. It will drop about 1"
3. Forward in the gap between the LU and the exhaust housing you'll see a shift rod and a bronze coupler. Remove one of the screws in the coupler.
4. Remove LU.

iwombat has this down cold. Once you take the 4 bolts out, the unit drops enough to see the shift rod connector and remove the lower bolt. It looks like this picture:
