Wow!....
That was easy....
Ok, I did that......:)
It's obvious that the impeller is right there.....
So, the only places that it can leak out are the shift shaft or the prop shaft, correct?.....:)

Re: Evinrude Sportwin 9.5 Questions......

If it is leaking from the top it is is the drive shaft or the shift rod. If it leaks from the sides, it is from the vent plug or the fill plug. If it leaks from the rear, its the propeller shaft. If it leaks from the top of the skeg, the spaghetti seal is loose. If it leaks from the middle of the skeg someone has loosened the pivot pin. Anything else, you might have a freeze crack.

If you are going to do a complete seal job, you will want a manual impact tool to get the skeg off - try Home Despot or Lowes. You will also need gasket sealer.

Is it possible to leak from the gasket under the water pump housing?....
When I had it upright, it would leak from the weephole at the bottom of the cavity next to the waterpump........
That was before I disassembled it......I have it sitting upside down to see if it will leak, or where.......
I don't see an obvious leak any where.....
This motor looks clean, I doubt whether is has ever seen salt water & I doubt that it froze.....
Is there a way to pressure test it?
Like a Merc Alpha drive?......
I wanna say thanks for the input ......

There is an approx. 4" brass plate just below the 'oil level' screw, that has a screw missing?
What is the function of that plate?.....

Drain the gearcase by removing both of the large slotted screws and avoiding the phillips like the black plague.

Put one of the slotted screws back in and use the other hole to pressurize the case to 10-12 psi. If you don't see or hear air leaks, drop it in a bucket of water and look for bubbles. You can use any air pump with a pressure gauge, just don't put too much pressure.

The drive shaft oil seal is in the carrier. The gasket is below the carrier. Both can leak, but the shaft seal is more likely to leak because it wears.

Re: Evinrude Sportwin 9.5 Questions......

The plate below the vent plug is the Water By-Pass Cover. It is a secondary source of cooling water with the primary one being the opening with a screen that is located just above the propeller.

When the propeller turns, it forces water directly into the screen. Whenever you run the motor, be sure to have the secondary below the water level.

If you run the motor in a tank, you will want the water above the actual level of the water pump.

Shift shaft seal......
It took a little pressure at first.....
I should probably redo all of the seals & the water pump base gasket, I would assume?......
I have an impact driver.....
What kind of sealant to use?
Are there any other special tools involved?

What is that screw for?

Can I get through this with a Clymer's or is the one from Ken Cook better?

What type of sealant should I use?.......:)

Re: Evinrude Sportwin 9.5 Questions......

The screw near the bottom of the skeg is a pivot pin for the shifter lever that connects to the shift rod and the clutch dog.

When you take the pin out, you can easily lose the alignment with the shifter lever, and in many cases have to disassemble the lower unit to reset it. The OMC manuals are the best available for the 9.5.

The manuals from Ken Cook are new printings of the original model specific service manuals from OMC. Look for a used one on ebay. It does not make much difference which one, but the ones from the later years are better. Except for cosmetic items like paint and decals, the motors and manuals for Johnson and Evinrude are identical.

The gearcase halves were originally to be sealed with Sealer 1000. Sealer 1000 is now called Adhesive M. It is 3M 847. You can ask your J/E OMC/BRP dealer for part #776964.

Substitutes for 3M-847 are Marprox Sealer 1000, Permatex 51813, or Loctite 518.

*******************

The seals and screws were to be installed with OMC Perfect Seal #4. That is now replaced by OMC/BRP Gasket Sealing Compound, part # 317201.

Substitutes for OMC/BRP Gasket Sealing Compound are Sierra part 18-9070, and Quicksilver Perfect Seal, among others.

I love doing this because nobody agrees on this stuff.

Thanks again, I went to Sea Way today, I didn't get any of the sealants though....
Luckily, I will be in the area tomorrow, (it's only 15 min. for me)......
They had a SELOC on sale for $23, but it still ain't the best....
Should I leave the phillips screw installed?....

How does the prop shaft seal come off?
I'm lucky that the pinion gear is the easy kind......
Ezeke & Iwombat, you know this engine inside & out, better than a Seloc...
Don't fail me now!.....:D :D

You mean the oil seal at the end of the prop shaft, right?

I don't remember any tricks to that one. It should pry right out with a seal puller, or some other reasonable implement of destruction.

Re: Evinrude Sportwin 9.5 Questions......

If you take the gearcase apart, you will need to remove the pivot pin to remove the skeg from the upper section.

After removing the prop shaft from the bearing carrier, you can pull the seal or push it out from behind. It will not give up its hold easily, so you will need a way to stabilize the carrier while you push or pull the seal out.

Will do....
I don't have a seal puller......
But I'll see if I can come up with one.....
So, basically there are only two seals?
The prop shaft & the drive shaft?
Am I supposed to pull the seal that sits under the water pump housing plate?
& an oring on the shift shaft?
Thanks for turning me on to SeaWay....
They have everything!
Thanks again guys!.......:)

A seal puller is one of those cheap tools that once you have you'll wonder how you ever got by w/o one.

Re: Evinrude Sportwin 9.5 Questions......

OK, the gearcase head & bearing, #42, does not want to go past the hole in the prop shaft where the sheer pin goes.....
Should this slide right off?...
Or does it need a three jaw puller to get it past to acess the oil retainer #43?
The gears & such are very clean, I doubt whether this engine has alot of hours, I DON'T WANT TO NEEDLESSLY DAMAGE ANYTHING  ....
I have an OEM manual on the way, but would like to proceed with your help & the Seloc manual, which leaves this little tid-bit out.....
It will be useful for tp while camping this summer, I suppose.....:) :)
Keep the knowledge coming!.....

File or sand the shaft at the edge of the shear pin holes until the shaft is round again. Use a Caliper if you have one. The shaft gets a little out of round at the shear pin from impact over the years. Keep the shaft well lubricated. Try not to cut behind the shear pin hole where the seal will be.
