also when running, when i rev it up it takes about 3-8seconds to return back to idle, what can i do to improve this? many many thanks dan

Re: evinrude starting question

It would help to know what motor you actually have. There is no such thing as a 1977 50hp. Your question concerning the choke leads me to think it has a choke knob on the front of the hood. Am I reading your mind right?

If it has that choke knob, pushed all the way in is "Manual choke off", pulled half way out is "Automatic Choke", and pulled all the way out is "Manual Choke on". For normal operation, leave it in the half way out position and use the choke switch on the remote control.

If you are pushing it all the way in because it wants to run rich and blubber after starting, that is another subject and there is a service bulletin on that. Get back with us if that is a concern here.

And stop revving it up in neutral like that. You are causing what is called "runaway", which is why it won't slow down. One of these days it is not going to stop running away and you will discover why I'm saying don't do that.

i wont rev it know in neutral, i now understand what your saying,
i will try and start it with choke half out, but i dont have a choke button on the remote, just throttle leaver and gear shift, is there something i'm missing????

Re: evinrude starting question

That is why people always ask for the model number. OK, so let's proceed without it. They used two types of choke switch on the control. The early ones were a toggle switch below the key switch. You hold up on the toggle to choke it while turning the key to start it. The later ones were a push-to-choke key switch. Push in on the key and hold it in to choke it while at the same time turning the key to start it. It is one or the other. As I said, in any case it won't do anything unless the manual choke on the motor is in the center, automatic position.

Don't feel bad, it is amazing how many people have a motor for ten years and don't know how to start it. Then they get disgusted and give up on it because the #%%&*@@ thing won't run.
