I have a 40 hp evinrude lark roughly between 1968 and 1970. it has electric transmision in the bottom section.i ran fine when started, but there was no evidence of the water pump working, where would the thermostat be exactly to test if the impellar is working or not? thanks for any help. Motor on far right with gold bottom section.

Re: Evinrude Thermostat trouble

Nafta - the engine is in the head, which is what the spark plugs are attached to. Facing the cylinder head, it should be on the top of the tower on the right, under the panel held in with three screws. You won't see much water coming out the back until the engine warms up and the thermostat opens. Keep your eye on it though if you're concerned about the cooling system. The water pump impeller should be changed out every couple of seasons as well.

Good luck!
