Evinrude trim question after replacing trim motor

I am replacing the trim motor on my Evinrude 1984 E115 TLCRD. The trim unit is on my bench. When motor is replaced is it possible and practical to check the unit for operation before reinstalling on the boat? If so, what procedure do you suggest?

Clamp the motor in a vice or test stand. Then fill up the reservoir with oil. Then take some jumper wires hooked to the motor and run the tilt all the way up. Then check the fluid level again and fill if needed. Then cycle it up and down 5 times and check the fluid again and fill if needed. Do this until it works properly. If it won't do this there is another problem.

Hey Boobie, I can't get this motor to run. The motor is a brand new OMC form a major supplier on line. The motor has only a green and a blue. Iassume they are for up and down. I also assumed it is grounded through the motor frame. I cleaned the paint off one of the motor connecting bolt holes and bolted a wire and ran it to my battery ground post. Ran another wire from the positive. Checked voltage supply and ground at the motor. Good. Touched positive wire to the green wire-nothing. Touched the blue wire - nothing. Any thoughts? What am I doing wrong? I doubt that this new motor is defective.

I may have figured it out. Finally got up the nerve to connect the green wire to the battery negative and blue wire to the battery positive. Motor ran in one direction. Switched wires and it ran in the other direction. Does this sound right?

Yes !!! That is the way the motor is wired. Not like the old ones.Was you old motor wired the same way ??

No. It had a blue and a green wire only the same wire hookup as the new motor. I knew green was down and blue was up, but thought it was grounded through the frame. I test ran the unit on the bench and it works fine. Thanks so much for your help. You saved me big bucks on this labor intensive repair. Before I close out this thread and before I re install the trim unit. I have one last question. I hear a lot about not putting never seize on bolts. Just what can I use?

I've always put marine grease on the bolts. Glad you got it !! Oh, by the way, I drink Miller Lite :tea:
