Evinrude triumph 55 transom bolts

These bolts are stuck how the he!! Do I get them out? The ones on the top you do not have to use a wrench on both sides because the hole on the motor holds in in place, well that is stripped so it just turns. BUT there is no way of getting a wrench on it!!! Help me please

Are they stainless steel bolts and nuts like they are supposed to be? Oh well at this point, it probably doesn't matter. I'd split the nuts if it were me. Unless the nuts are in the pockets. That would present a problem.

Pockets?? They should be stainless considering they are from the 60s and not rusted! By pockets do you mean the little groove in the motor mount??

If that is the 68-69 3 cylinder 55HP, you don't need to take the transom bolts out to take off the motor,....if that is the goal.
There are two brackets that hold the motor in place....undo the two top locking bolts and the motor slides right out, vertically.

Yes, by pockets I meant the recessed area that keeps the bolt head or nut from turning as you were referring to. Stainless steel, yes---as long as it has the factory supplied bolts and nuts. I have no way of knowing that except if you tell me. Finally, it is true that you don't have to remove the brackets in order to remove the motor from the boat--if it has separate brackets. But again, I have no way of knowing if you have the separate brackets unless you tell us, nor why you are trying to remove the brackets if they are separate. We can only act on the information given us.

Well that will help but I am repowering with a merchant so everything has to come off

unfortunately aluminum and stainless together cause galvanic corrosion and the aluminum around the stainless tends to succumb to corrosion.

I need everything off I am repowering with a merc! The pockets are stripped! I cant hold the bolt!

So.....how much of the threaded portion of the bolt sticking out beyond the nut? Enough to get a Vise-Grips on it to hold it while you get the nut to come off far enough to get the bolt head out of the pocket, then a wrench? Doing that probably will cause the threads to gall when the nut gets to the area you damaged with the Vise-Grips. You may then wind up getting out the hack saw to finish the job.

One way is to drill a hole through the nut, parallel with the bolt. Enlarge the hole till there is virtually no material left on that side of the nut (sort of like a groove cut out of one side). Then go at it with a hammer and chisel to open the groove, which will loosen the nut on the threads. Due to the size they may be so tough that you can't spread them open with the chisel. In that case do the other side also. Then it will split off in two halves.

Actually, I sort of hate to discuss it because I know you are going to have a rough time with those big stainless nuts. Use a cobalt drill bit in a slow variable speed drill. Stainless "work hardens" if you don't take it easy, and can get to the point where you can do nothing with it. Depends on exactly what type of stainless (alloy) it is. Some is worse than others.

There are other ways, depending on what equipment you have. Those little 3" air powered disc grinders cut very well.
