Evinrude V4 Questions

Hi,

I have a 1993 Evinrude 115hp V4. Is this a crossflow or looper motor and why did Evinrude make some V4's one vs. the other?

Is there a big difference in performance? Is there any difference in maintenance or reliablity?

I have read about some motors being 60 and 90 degree's, what is the difference and does this relate to the crossflow/looper designation?

This is a new motor to me, any service/maintenance recommendations beyond the basics of fuel/water pump/plugs?

OMC made crossflows and loopers in the 90degree configuration. I think they only made loopers in the 60 degree configuration. If your motor has transfer ports on the outside of the block, about 1/2 way between the carbs and head, it is a crossflow. If no transfer ports, it is a looper.

Now, if you look at the block or the cowling. If it is triangular, it is a 90 degree model. If it is mostly rectangular, and the carbs are seperate one barrel carbs it is a 60 degree model.

In 93 the 115's were all 90 degree crossflows. They made them in both configurations in 95. 115 hp is the same in either engine. The loopers were probably a little more fuel effiecient. The crossflows were more susceptible to carbon deposits around the rings. I'd run a can of engine tuner throught it on an annual basis to maximize your service life.
