Evinrude VRO Alarm

I have an Evinrude 155 Commercial (1991). I installed the VRO oil tank and attached the wires as per the instructions, but the fast chirping alarm goes off constantly. I put a gallon into the 1.8 gallon reservoir. I have tried unplugging the connectors and nothing stops the alarm. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, is there a float that should be moving in the reservoir? I can't seem to find one. I thought it might be stuck in the down position. Thanks in advance to all.

Re: Evinrude VRO Alarm

The fast chirping as you call it, if you're speaking of a beep every other second, does not pertain to the tank oil level. That warning pertains to the VRO pump.

Have you pumped the oil primer bulb with the oil line disconected at the engine in order to have the oil flow to that point? Then, have you connected the oil line and applied pressure to the oil primer bulb one more time to force oil into the VRO pump?

The warnings pertaining to a V/6 engine are:

1 - Constant and steady beep = Overheating or Fuel Restriction.
2 - Beep every 20 seconds = Oil level at 1/4 tank mark.
3 - Beep every other second = VRO failure, No oil, Air gaining access to oil line, Oil restriction, etc.

I neglected to mention... If that chirping might be a very rapid fire type beeping, that is not a constant steady beep, nor a beep every other second, but rather a machine gun type, extremely fast type beeping... that is caused by either a faulty warning horn, or by hooking a warning wire up backwards (Sensor wire to ground, Ground wire to sensor).

Re: Evinrude VRO Alarm

Joe- Thanks for your answers. I am referring to the very fast beeping. I seem to remember in my service manual that the every 1/2 second beep was the no oil in reservoir warning. Perhaps it is as you say, reversed wiring past the bullet connectors as I am pretty sure these are connected correctly.- Jason
BTW- Yes, I performed all of the steps you mentioned. I made sure the oil was in the clear tube at the pump also. I also made sure oil was being used by marking the tank.
