Ok, I now have the Seloc and Clymers manual for my 85 120hp. I’m waiting for the rebuild kit(s) from Hawaii. I’ve found some differences between the manuals and my engine setup though. Any input on the following?

1) The top of the VRO pump in both manuals shows the output mix hose connection at a right angle. My hose goes straight down onto it and makes a horrible 180 degree bend. Am I missing a right angle fitting that should be on there? And what’s with that clip-on item that’s on that hose and shown in the manual? It’s just a black rubber thing about 1” long. Is that to keep the cover from hitting it? Or to keep it away from the pump?

2) “The spark arrestor on all models is installed in the pulse hose to the VRO pump. This flame arrestor prevents a backfire flame from entering the VRO pump……. “ Took all the hoses off and replaced all clamps. Nothing like this on my engine!?

3) “The oil inlet filter, located in the VRO reservoir oil pickup line, prevents any dirt or foreign material from entering the pump……” Don’t seem to have this on my rig either.

Do I need to order these items? Immediately? Thanks again

Re: Evinrude VRO pump rebuilding questions

Over the last 18 years there were improvements and changes to the VRO system. You would need someone who knew the bulletins and changes to the filter, hoses, clamps, pump versions, etc. to upgrade your unit to new specs.

The Jan. 2000 issue of Bass and Walleye Boats or the Feb 2000 Trailer Boats had stories on how to upgrade and repair your VRO, including part numbers. Go to their websites and see if you can buy a back issue.
