Hi
I have inherited an old 18hp evinrude, i don't know much about it's history, it's serial no. is 18902BC595502,
could anyone tell me it's age?
it is also not pumping much water, it is merely spraying every now and again (that's with the thermostat taken out), i've replaced the water pump and the gromet on the top of the water pump, i've run the hose through the lines and it seems to flow alright so it can't be blocked, any comments/ideas on what to try would be most appreciated
Cheers mike
sorry i put this in the wrong topic(first time)

If I am reading this right, 18 is the HP and 902 is the model number.
If so, then it is a 1931 model.

Hi Mike and welcome to the forums.

I read your engine as a 1969 year. (Model number 18902)

How are you supplying water to the engine for running? Hose or do you have it in a garbage can? And does it get hot?

might spurt water at low speeds, but give you a steady stream at higher rpms. If you can hold the side of your hand on the top of the head for at least a few seconds while it's running, it's not overheating (but don't burn yourself).

I've run it with both the hose, and had no waterflow at all, then i tried it in a garbage can of water and had more sucess but it was a pretty weak flow.
Thanks for the age outboardjim!!

Hi Mike111

If you run it in a garbage can, make sure the water covers the pump housing from start. This paticular pump isnt good at priming itself. The pump is the round shape above the antiventilation plate which is the largest horisontal plate above prop. Where did you attach the hose ? The intake on a 18 HP is at the front of the exhaust tube, hard to put a hose to without a special adapter. For how long did you run it without hose working? You might have damaged the pump impeller.

As G Dane said, the water intake is above the prop.

Water muffs that you find at boat stores will pump hose water in and out of water OUTLETS while you impeller is dry and being ruined.

Tempo makes a hose adaptor for those engines that costs about $30 from West Marine on special order.
