Hi
Picked up an outboard that has no top cover so not sure what it is.It looks like a 15 or 20 horse
It is plated as model no. J15BACSD and serial no B018020, if anyone can id this engine it would be most helpful.
Thanks.

Good point JB!
Two things spring to mind:
1) You've got an Evinrude cover on a Johnson engine.
2) The ID plate or transom clamp has been replaced. Ensure the serial number matches the one on the round silver disk (welsh plug) on the engine itself.

Back when Evinrude actually assembled engines in Milwaukee and Johnson assembled engines in Waukegan, Evinrude built engines-25hp and down-both Johnson and Evinrude- had a serial number starting with E. Waukegan(Johnson and Evinrude) assembly built engines started with a J. When assembly at Milwaukee closed years ago, all production was at Johnson.
Backfire ;)

Hi
Thanks for the posts. There is no cover which is one of the reasons I was having trouble with the eng id. It looked similar to a evinrude I had seen but it may well be a Johnson. The plate shows no sign of tampering and the no matches that on the plug in the eng. I would say its probably original.
Thanks
Paul.
