I just bought a 85HP evinrude and he said it was a early 80 model? it is blue in color with tilt and trim,and unlike my 85 HP 70's model the coils are in the back where my other is on the top of motor so can anyone say what year they changed it,I also seen the new one has a peep hole for water pump to spray out of...

look on the tag by where it mounts to your transom and there should be a plate. what are the numbers on it.

for any Evr/Johnson 1980 or newer you can determine year this way : write the word introduces...put a 1 under the i , a 2 under the n , a 3 under the t and so on until you get to 0 under the s...sometimes you have to drop the last letter of the model and you use the last 2 letters to determine the year

yeah what he said just give me the numbers and all and if its 80 or newer i can tell ya all about it i have a book on it. prior to 80 all i can tell you is the hp and the year.im still learning on this stuff also.
