Evinrude won't peg out

My Evinrude 1977 70hp model #77073S cranks and runs on warm up setting but won't wind up like it did just a few days ago. The problem started Sunday and we let it warm up for a very long time and finally it revved up. Today, it never would rev up and would die when we tried to put it into gear. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I read the post about the Johnson that dies when put into gear. How would one make a fuel adjustment as suggested for that motor.

I would check for spark to the plugs first. If you find one that is not sparking replace the ignition coil to that plug. If it is a fuel problem you probably have some crap in the high speed jet. Your float also could be sticking. Remove the offending carb and clean the needle valve and seat. Adjust your float to where it is level with the carb when turned upside down.
