OK, here is the newest in my vacation problems,

Evinrude 9.9 (found out it was an 87 not an 84/85)

Got it going yesterday after sitting for 5 years.
But it will only run on Starter Fluid! So, I think
ah, take off the Carb and clean it up@! Well, I did
and it was pretty bad. The pin hole in the screw was
completely blocked. Got it all put back together
and it still will not run? I can keep it running on
Starter fluid, but it seems like it isn't getting
any gas to it? I can't figure out where else to look.
The carb is clean now. Any ideas? I am going to get
a new can of gas as well as I think yesterday there was some
residue in the old tank which may be what is causing the problem.
New gas + lube + Old residue = smells like old gas?

The fuel line is getting gas to the filter and even to the Carb?
But it doesn't seem to be going from the Carb mixing and into the engine?

Thanks
H

First of all, don't run the engine on starting fluid unless it is lubricated starting fluid made for two stroke engines otherwise your running engine without lube and will burn it up. If you have fresh gas, and the engine was running before storage, I would still suspect the carb, clogged jet likely. If you are certain carbs cleaned well and you have made no adjustments, you may have weak spark, I would then try an new plug and see if it helps.

Well, yup. I ran it for about 10 min today off of gas, but it only ran with Choke full out.

I suspect something in the Fuel filter may be to blame.

The Carb is totally clean and I have gas actually getting to the Carb, which is why the Filter is the funny thing to be getting in the way.

I can't find a good diagram of a working filter nor can I find parts around town here to see if that is what the problem is. I am alomst 100% sure the Carb is ok now. After running it for 10 min with the choke full out it would die any time you pushed the choke off it???

Thanks for the suggestions.
H

I hope when you say you are running it off of gas I hope you mean a mixture of 50:1 (with a good 2cylcle oil). It sounds like your high speed jet is clogged with stuff. Remove your carb and take a bread wrapper twist tie (with the coating removed) and run it up in the jet. Used compressed air to make sure that it is blown out clean. Remove your needle valve and seat while you are in there and clean them too. Set your float so it is level with the carb when turned upside down. Let us know if this worked.
