Evinrude wont stay primed!

I have 1971 9.5hp evinrude and it runs for 30-40 seconds until all gas is gone from line..but if i prime ball couple times it stays running another 30sec. I made sure all connections are tight from tank to engine.iam using a new attwood 6gal plastic tank and double plugin fitting from walmart but used proper thread sealer..any hints!! egine runs SUPER till loses fuel in line

Is the tank vent open?

Sounds like the fuel pump is shot. Prime it and remove the gas line going to the carb and put it in a gas can. Start the motor and watch to see if it is pumping fuel. If it weren't venting the primer bulb would collapse, so repriming wouldn't be possible. Besides it usually takes longer than 1/2 a minute for improper venting to have an effect.

How hard is it to rebuild fuel pump? this motor was rebuilt 2 yrs ago and fuel pump looks pretty new with new gaskets......

That doesn't mean much, the diaphram could be perforated. Don't know if you can get it kit for those pumps, most people on Iboats forums just replace the pump from one from the Iboats store. Test it first.

the earliest pump i can find on here fits from 82' and up ...is there anyway u can find the one i need and tell me the site address ?? I would appreciate it very much. I have 1971 9.5hp evinrude sportwin outboard pullstart motor modle # 9122R

Should be the same physical pump (square pump with 4 screws and a big center screw) with the possibility of the fuel outlets being in a different position. I have the kit instructions , it explains how to assemble with the hose fittings in different positions.

then can i purchase a new fuel pump from iboats? just skip the rebuilding? whats the sierra # for that? Thanks very much for your help!!!!!
