evinrude xp 150 starting prob.

I have an evinrude xp 150 think its an 85. Just wanting to know why it takes like 10 min to get it started i have to crank and crank then finally it will start anybody got any ideas why it does this let me know i just bought this motor so i know nothing about it, another thing when i do get it started and turn it off and then turn it back on 10 min later it starts up fine but next day back to cranking and cranking.. please help

I have the same motor 1985 xp150. First make sure you are starting it correctly. Pump primer ball to firm, shifter in neutral, fast start lever up about midway, push key in while turning to right, the pushing of key activates the choke. If you have been doing all this already and still have problem then activate choke manually, do this by removing engine hood look at the starboard side of motor, look for a small red lever rotate that lever ( it will only go one way) this lever is your primer or choke in the event that your electric choke fails.

The fuel primer solenoid used for cold starts may not be functioning. That solenoid feeds extra fuel to the top of each carb for cold start. It activates when you turn the key to on and push the key in. To check it, pull the small hose off the top carb, prime the hose bulb, then turn the key to on and depress the key-you should get a small amount of fuel out of the loose end of the hose. Normally, you will have to depress the key for 10-20 seconds before starting, then occasionally bump (push in) the key a few times to keep it running till it warms up.

Did what you said and it started right up thanks... how fast does your motor go i was just wondering i havnt had a chance to take mine out yet.
