Hey guys I have a 1991 Xp 175 that has the 35 amp charging system....the flywheel has about a 2 inch section of sheared teeth on the ring gear. The compression of the motor likes to leave the flywheel in this spot after the motor is turned off, hence the starter just spins and can't engage the ring gear. It's annoying and slightly embarrassing to have to pull the cover and turn the flywheel by hand sometimes. Here's my question, used flywheels for this motor seem rare, is it possible to just replace the ring gear. Or...is it even feasible to have someone weld some metal onto the stripped spot and re cut the teeth on the ring gear? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Have to be really careful with warpage and throwing it out of balance with welding as well as destroying the magnets. Don't know the motor that well though. Decent machine shop could possibly insert it for you and re-machine the teeth. With teeth missing it is already out of balance. My opinion is that it needs to be resolved a.s.a.p.
How about a photo to show us all just what you have.

Re: Evinrude XP 175 flywheel question

The factory 583844 vented flywheel has been discontinued. Last price on the flywheel: $ 700. The similar vented flywheels on the older XP/GT units will not work on your engine. The timing ring in the center of the flywheel is different. A couple of options: 1. You will need to find that same part number on a junked engine. 2. There is one new flywheel still in stock at a US dealer: US BOATWORKS INC., 930 OSAGE AVE., KANSAS CITY, KS. 66105 Phone: (913) 342-0011 3. You could switch your stator to the 9 amp type and use the more conventional (non-vented) flywheel. That 9 amp flywheel 582403 has also been discontinued, but it's was more widely used-more likely you may find one of these used. A friend recently replaced his 89 GT flywheel-in the same condition. The benidix on his was damaged, so it got replaced at the same time. May have contributed to the flywheel tooth damage.

You could try the top secret files at the beginning of this forum and look for salvage yards.
