I am working on a 1974 evinrude outboard. this motor was brought to me because it would not start or run except on starting fluid(according to the customer).I rebuilt the carburetor and the fuel pump assembly. At an idle the engine runs beautifuly, but if i accelerate the engine it starts to run rich and eventually will return to an idle speed (even though the throttle is wide open). if I slowly return the throttle back to idle the engine start to run beautifuly again.
I removed the carb again just to recheck my work and all seems good in carbville :) the fuel pump assembly has also been removed and rechecked again all seems good here too. i have replaced the spark plugs twice now due to fouling. if i never rev it up it would run all day long and never foul out a plug. your assistance would be appreciated. by the way i did check the compression. no problem here both 130 even .

Hello.
When you hooked the carburator back on the throttle, did you also take care to properly adjust the synchronisation so the throttle and the ignition advance equally and at the same rate?
Mops.

on most engines there is an adjustment setting but not on this particular engine everything is just hooking up the linkage. thanks db

Could it be the float and the pin assembly?

Just a couple things to check boater....

Check that the gas tank is vented and there is no restrictions in the fuel line between the tank and motor.

Check for blow back (puffing out the carbs) when engine is running. This is a sign of reed damage.

How did you set the float levels? With the carb body upside down, the floats should be level with the gasket surface.

Keep us posted.

I'm with OBJ on thinking possible reed problems. If they tried starting it with ether, I'll bet it popped back hard, a couple of times.

I'm also wondering if they sheered a flywheel key?
