I need to add Trim/tilt fluid to my system but it appears the fill /drain plug is on the side facing the engine mountings & not backwards. Any ideas on how I get to fill it ?

The fill plug should be on the Trim/Tilt cylinder....little more than half way up, on the front of the cylinder.....facing you as you look at it. You sure your looking at the right plug?

The trim/tilt motor sits on top of a Reservoir and the cylinder & shaft next to that- it seems to me I need to fill the reservoir - or is that incorrect?

I should look where my fingers type. Yes, you need to fill the reservoir. The plug should be on the front of the reservoir. Large head with a screw slot.

EDIT: As your looking at the unit from the back of the boat, which side is the motor and reservoir on?

OBJ, Some of those 40, 48 and 50 motors had a "Touch Trim" System.

See Service Bulletin 2244.

Edi: Didn't read everything. My comment is not relevant.

Sorry for butting in.

Not a problem ezeke.

Tiyr < that's what happens when your fingers get messed up.....d:)

You refering to the pressurized cylinders.....the ones that cost an arm and leg to replace and ain't worth two hoots? Possible that's what kritzi has.

The motor is on the left, cylinder on the right. Could I fill the reservoir by taking off the motor?

I really would not advise that. I'm posting a link for you to the BRP site, engine diagrams. Follow the prompts until you get to your engine (a model number will be good) and when you get to the parts breakdown for your engine, click on trin/tilt. I'm having a little difficulting in seeing how the fill plug could get on the back side of the reservoir.

The diagrams helped- looks like the fill plug faces the transom! Great- get to take the whole darm motor off the boat!
Thanks for your help folks

Kritzi....are you SURE the fill plug is facing the boat? That would be one for the books if it is. Not doubting your call or eyesight, but might you be able to post a pic of the Unit?

Re: Evirude 1991 40hp trim/tilt

I'm looking at the service manual.

If you raise the outboard, "engage the trail lock levers", and look just below the trim motor you should see the fill plug facing to the rear of the outboard.

It appears to be less than 1/2 inch below the base of the electric trim motor.

In the BRP parts diagram, the T&T diagram part #30 is the fill plug and is facing the rear of the engine as shown.

Re: Evirude 1991 40hp trim/tilt

So, the fill plug is on the left it appears, facing the mounting- I cannot remove the whole trim but did remove the pin on the top of the piston rod so I could pull the unit to the horizontal position and then managed to put a whole lot of hydraulic fluid into the reservoir which has made the up trim work reasonably again. Is it possible to fill the reservoir completely in this position?>

Re: Evirude 1991 40hp trim/tilt

That is weird.

The book says to tilt the engine all the way up and top off reservoir. Cycle the engine up and down 4>5 times and check the level again. Normal level is even with the bottom of the fill hole.

This could really be a real big pain in the patut for ya' kritzi. Gonna' have to look at a book....maybe one of the other guys can come up with an idea...maybe turning the whole unit around.....ain't sure.

I have the 89 and the fill plug is on the side facing the mounting bracket. had a heck of a time trying to add fluid. I bent a slotted screw driver, slid it into the top half of the slot of the fill plug and tapped it with a hammer to break it loose then removed it with needle nose pliers. filled with a squeeze bottle and thin tubing. cant understand the location of this plug.
