exaust leak

hello,i just rebuilt the carb,replaced the reeds,reed gaskets, exaust manifold gasket,fuel primer,fuel pumpand water pump on my 35hp johnson 2 cyl 1984.but still have exaust and little water coming from the (i thimk it is called the crankcase cover)(it is the part that is between the reed plate and the block.do those gaskets leak often or is there a good chance the block is cracked? i am a poor fishermanand will have to do this myself will i be able to strip it down to the crankcase cover with out any speical tools?i really cant see the true spot that it is leaking from.the engine runs fine with the cover off but when you put the cover on it stalls due to the exaust.and yes i do have a seloc manual.thanks

You may have a base gasket leak, that is the gasket that seals the powerhead to the adaptor plate beneath. If this is the case than you will have to remove the powerhead to change the gasket. The seloc manual will walk you through the process.<br /><br />There should be nothing leaking around the crankhalves or the reed plate area.If there is somehting leaking than it is fuel as there is no water circulation at that part of the block. This is not a good thing and will cause the motor to fail. If the leak is at the bottom of the block, at the crankhalves than it still may be the base gasket. Best I can do with the description. It's not the easyiest repair to do but the book will help. No real special tools required except some mussel in lifting the powerhead off after you've freed it up. Scrapers, wrenches, side-cutter, and screwdrivers should do the trick. Good luck.

If the base gasket blows, it can leak both exhaust and water. It really depends on where the leak is located.

is the base gasket the same thing as the bottom seal that consist of o rings ans springs bearings and so on...my manual dont really tell me where to start or really what to do.

The base gasket is the one directly under the powerhead (engine) assembly.

ok i noticed that 1 bolt head is broken off and as i tried to turn a diff one and the head broke off easy.so i think i am going to let dockside marine do the job.they said about 160.00 labor and about 2 or 3 bucks.plus extra for the broken bolts.does this seem fair?

ok guys you were right it was the base gasket.the shop said it is ready.thank you its kinda funny the gasket cost 2 bucks but the job cost 208.54.anyway thanks

Time is always worth something. Especially if the guy that is doing the work knows what he is doing and the payer doesn't. It sounds fair to me. Not trying to be a smart***.

well i know how to do it but the bolt heads ALL broke off and two were already broke off.but anyways look out flounder because here i come.
