i am completly new to boating, i just purchased a 1977 sea ray with a 228mercruiser in it..... this may be a stupid ?, but is there a way to make the boat louder? ive used the search feature but i got a lot of results fo hull exhaust, and my exhaust vents through the prop...... the boat is extremely quiet, which is nice for most, but for some reason id like it to be louder

Re: Exaust noise

Firstly, welcome to iBoats.

Why on earth do you want to make the noise LOUDER???? Do you dislike other boaters that much that you want to ruin their peace and tranquility? Please, leave it nice and quiet.

Re: Exaust noise

There are two lines of thought on the subject.
One, I like noise.
Two, Are you some kind of little kid who doesn't know any better!
If you read the forum enough, you'll learn, "I put through hull exhaust on my boat, sounded great, for about thirty minutes, then it got boring, to me an anyone within ear shot."
I keep telling people to go the the nearest drag strip, record an afternoon of racing, then put the tape in your boat When the urge strikes you, play the tape LOUD.
It's kind of like, "How do I get my boat to go faster?"
If you read the forums enough, you'll know.

I myself have captains call systems in both my boat my so you can choose loud or quiet modes. Boats are for fun and sometimes it is fun to have it loud and hear the power.Nothing sounds cooler than the sound of a throaty V8
If you don't like the sound of loud boats, get off the water and play golf or something. However riding through the marina at 2am with twin 502s with the exhaust in open mode would be irresponsible, but Ishboo25, if you want assistance on converting your boat to thru-hull exhaust I'd be happy to help you.( I think you said you had a V8 right)

Re: Exaust noise

if you have mercruiser drives , you can swap the exhaust bellows for the tube and get the noise when you are trimmed up and still be quiet when in no-wake with the trim all down . Captains call exhaust is an expensive option

To you may be... but not to me. I got out on the water to get away from the normal noise and nuisance of the city.

Why should other people be forced to put up with your racket, just because YOU like it.

As one of the previous posters said "If you like the noise, go to the local drag strip and record some. Then play it as loud as you like with headphones on!!!

Well, why should I not be able to listen my engine or the original poster not be able to modify his boat because YOU don't like to hear it.

Its not like you have to listen to the noise the whole time, its just a passing boat in the distance. The louder it is the faster he is going away from you, so get over it, it will pass.

Well, I for one like to hear the sound of my engine, especially a V8, not to be offensively loud either. My last 2 new cars were so quiet, I accidently hit the starter a few times with it running! Until after awhile I put mellow Flowmaster mufflers on them. I think it is a matter of personal taste, & choice. On the water, I still prefer to hear my engine, rather then rushing, splashing water, or engine compartment noise! It happens to be a good diagnostic tool as well, I'd never run straight pipes, like some of these Harley bikers (talk about loud!) but I did have thru-hull exhaust on my last 2- I/O V8's, my 228hp with rubber exhaust hose, plus the water cooling, was not that loud, my 350/260hp I put marine mufflers on it, it sounded like glasspacks.

Also, Bond-0 is right, unless you have late model center rise manifolds you usually can't put thru hull exh. on your boat, But a cheap simple mod is to remove your exhaust bellows, and use an exhaust tube (it's like a small funnel). At least you'll be able to hear your engine some then, it's fairly quiet when idling, but gets loudest once you get on plane. Search around here for "exhaust tube"

Its not just because you are 22...May of us "older" boaters like to hear the sound too...They are never going to mandate mufflers on boats..If they did, it would only be on brand new boats, they are not going to make you go put a muffler on your boat if it didn't come from the factory with one. Its never going to happen, as you said, cars are everywhere, boats are a recreational/off road vehicle. You can't get away from cars, everyone has one, so if their were no mufflers, the world would be just full of noise pollution. Its a choice to go to the lake/bay/ocean and if you don't like the sound of boats, you're in the wrong hobby.

In florida there is a 50 db from 50 ft rule. There are exceptions Like anything with a tunnel hull or a boat registered for a regatta or race and so on

Right you are... NOT

This summer the park rangers were ticketing operators with excessively loud boats. And then telling them to take it off the lake and bring it back when the exhaust is quieter...

http://www.nps.gov/lame/planyourvisit/boating.htm

Noise
Operating a boat which produces a noise in excess of 82 decibels measured at 82 feet is prohibited. Not all muffled engines will meet this requirement. No vessel shall be equipped with, nor shall any person install upon a vessel a siren, whether operable or not, except for authorized emergency and enforcement vessels.

Re: Exaust noise

the question is ... if you put one of those tr tubes on the exhaust bellows how loud is it? Is it anything like the Thru hulls? I used to have thru hulls on my liberator which is bieng sold. I would never want thru hull again but I am curious of the these bellows tubes

Bellow tubes were used by Merc on their V8s in the mid 80s.. They went back to full bellows later and have been ever since....
