Excess vertical play in intermediate shift shaft? Alpha1G1

Reassembling a Alpha1 Gen 1 outdrive. I have the bellhousing on, assembled the drive housing to it. There seems to be excessive vertical play in the intermediate shift shaft in the drive housing. It is barely engaged with the upper shift shaft when pushed downwards. When pushed upwards, it fits fine. The exploded diagram does not show any shims, washers or spacers to hold it up. When I put the lower unit on, it does not force it upwards at all- still sloppy loose. What holds this thing in position?

There is supposed to be a stainless flat washer on the top of the shift shaft bushing. This washer holds the brass intermediate shaft up so that it stays engaged in the bottom of receiver under the bellhousing. You will have to drop the lower to add the washer.

#52 I assume. I did not check if it was present. (no internet at shop).
I am guessing a regular washer will do.

It may have worn out or possibly former owner dropped it or forgot to put it back. I had a Dodge truck transmission that would not downshift. Turns out that I left off a shifter washer that acted as a special spacer. Duh.....

Happy now! Only took 6 months to get this drive swapped out. Likely still save some adjustments etc, but hopefully the heavy lifting is completed.
