Excess Wiring?

In digging into the wiring of my boat, I have found that things such as the bow lights and other connections have about 2-4 feet of extra wiring that are in the "bundle" of wires. They seem to "S" back and forth and then come out and to the switches. Is that normal? Should I do that with new accessories? I can understand having some excess for movement so they aren't strained, but 2-4' seems excessive.

That is excessive. Wire them up leaving just enough for a litlle movement.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

The extra wire may be there for servicing - you need room to remove the device (switch, light, etc) and repair it or wire up a new one. 4' may be somewhat excessive but if it's not giving you a problem I'd leave it if it is in good shape.

Im an electrician and I leave 1-2' or so of extra wire, as above mentioned, it sure is nice to have that extra wire when servicing the device, plus you have a buffer if ever need to relocate or re-splice the terminations.

More or less just makes it easier for service in the future.

-John
