I have a new to me 1997 15hp. I just worked on the carb and the motor is running fine but I "feel" like it is burning more fuel than it should. Again I have no experince with this motor to compare fuel burm it's just a "feeling". Now that said, I have the idle screw out 4.5 turns which yeilded my best idle. It runs great every where but accerating quickly were the motor "stumbles" just alittle then screams.

My question, is 4.5 turns out just way out of line and I should try and set it again? And at 4.5 turns out would that make my over all fuel burn higher?

Re: excessive fuel consumption????

I have a johnson 10 hp but my mANUAL is at work right now, just from my reading of it ...

Idle is usually set on the lean side so as not to load the crankcase up with fuel, try 1 1/2 turns out and see if that eliminates the stumble on acceleration. I think it can be set leaner but its best done on the water in gear at idle, that puts the correct load on it.

It won't affect the fuel consumption much though.

Its highly advised not to play with these engines without the factory manual, its so easy to blow the engine with a simple mistake.

But if you look in the FAQ files I'm certain you can fgind the Joe Reeves method to adjust and set the carb.

And you can find a real factory manual at www.kencook.com

Ever heard the term "patience is a virtue?" Absence of an answer probably means nobody has one. High fuel consumption without any numbers is a rather useless statement. Your engine at wide open throttle will burn about 1.5 gallons/hour. At speeds less than that it will burn less. How much less depends on lots of factors. If you worked on the carb you could have worked on it incorrectly. Incorrect float setting can affect that. An inlet needle and seat that is incorrectly installed or not sealing properly can cause high fuel use. But without some actual numbers we don't know. Is the engine simply worn out? Is compression ok. When was the last tune up?

4.5 turns seems a little much.

and follow all the other advice that has been offered.
