Excessive Play in Throttle / Transmission Control

I have what I think is a lot of movement of the throttle after 115 Johnson is engaged before the motor accelerates. The mechanic said the parts inside the throttle control box are badly worn and I either need to replace the controls or rebuild. Where can I get a repair kit? Is this a project a beginner can do? Will the linkage have to be adjusted once the controls have been rebuilt? Will it take special tools?

Hi RJCamp<br /><br />You have to let the folks know a little bit more information if you want some help. There are dozens of controls and many 115 models. <br /><br />How old is the motor? Is that a side mount control? What is the model number?

The motor is a 1982 Johnson 115hp -- model no. J115TLCNB. I can't find a model no. on the remote control, but it is a single level w/ tilt control. key start switch w/ choke is in the rear, fast idle arm on top, overheat warning. Your control should move about 32 degrees from the start (upright) position for shifting, then acceleration begins as the throttle engages after that. <br /><br />Watch the linkage at the engine as you move the handle and you can see the action. <br /><br />Adjustment of the throttle cable is made at the engine using the Shift Trunnion Adjustment Nut (black thumbwheel) <br /><br />Parts for your control will have to come from a J/E dealer or salvage.

How far should the control move after it shifts to move forward before it accelerates? I move the control approximately 80 degress from upright position. I would need to try it again, but it seems to engage at the proper offset. Could excessive wear in the fiber parts cause this, or is it adjustment at the motor. The parts look ok, but I have nothing to compare to. Thanks for your prior feedback.

After the 32 degree point, acceleration should begin. If there is none, you may have a broken cable, or the cable may have slipped in its housing at the engine. There is a lot of chatter on this site about replacement cables. So use the search button above, and you will find the information. <br /><br />I don't know if your mechanic opened up the control or not, but unless a part is broken, you will probably not need more than a new cable.
