excessive smoke and exhaust noise

I have a 1996 25 hp johnson outboard J25TEEDA. While the motor is running there seems to be an excessive amount of smoke coming from around the bottom of powerhead, and also the exhaust noise level seems to be very loud. I have pulled the powerhead and the exhaust tube and all gaskets were in good shape. I would greatly appreciate any and all help to resolve this problem if at all possible. AGAIN THANKS

Where were you running the mtr ??

Motor running in the water or on hose / tank ??
