Excessive smoke

Hello all,

I'm getting way too much smoke from my '76 6hp Evinrude....I've been using fresh gas and oil (non synthetic) which I very carefully measured to get the 50:1 ratio right. What else could be causing this issue? Seems to get worse at higher RPM's.

thanks in advance!

Re: Excessive smoke

The 50/1 mixture.... 1 pint of good quality 50/1 oil to 6 gallons of gasoline (87 octane=ok).

The computes to 2.6 ounces of the 50/1 oil per gallon of gasoline. Is this what you're using? If so, and it's smoking way too much, I can only assume that the carburetor is set improperly.

Re: Excessive smoke

If barrel testing, it'll appear to smoke worse. If you fogged it for storage, it'll smoke like crazy until that's burned off. If you're using sea-foam in your fuel, it will smoke as carbon is cleaned off internal parts. As long as it's not overheating, you're not hurting anything. As Joe said above, if the carb is dumping too much fuel in, that could cause the smoky issue, and would definitely have rich-looking spark plugs. And as boobie says ^, running too cool could cause problems too.

Good luck

Re: Excessive smoke

Thanks folks,

So, I'm using fresh gas and oil at 50:1....Thermostat is new; the motor warms up nicely.....so based on these replies I'm probably running too rich. I'll tinker with it this weekend and let you know.

How does it run otherwise? What do the plugs look like? Have you checked compression lately?

Re: Excessive smoke

A bad fuel pump diaphram will leak fuel into the crankcase causing more smoke.
A bad head gasket will make "smoke".Actually steam that dissipates faster than oil smoke.
Steam is white 2 cycle smoke is bluish and lingers.
Also there is a crankcase drain the drains excess fuel from the crankcase. If it's plugged there would be a buildup.
Older motors just dumped it in the water. Newer motors recycle it.Either way if malfunctioning might cause smoke.
