exhaust and gimble boots

i have a mercruiser 233 in a 77 sea ray pre alpha outdrive. i need to get the gimble ring off to replace the gimble and exhaust boots and other things this winter. how do i get the ring off? i pulled the cotterpin out but the pin that has a groove in it wont budge. do i need to heat it up cause it does look like its coroded. also when the motor is out what exact parts do i need to convert it to through haul exhaust?

Leave the Gimbel Ring,..... Pull the Gimbel Housing.........

also when the motor is out what exact parts do i need to convert it to through haul exhaust?

I don't think the Manifolds are available for that old Ford to do that..............

i was told i had to change to center risers. i know that site and the guy realy well but it doesnt tell me exactly how to get the lower pin out. i was going to just pull the whole thing but then i will still need to get the ring off so i can change the boots and shifter cable.

Split it appart at the Horizonal Swivel Points,.........

The Gimbel Ring stays on the Boat, when changing the Bellows,+ Shift Cable.......

ok but how do i get the lower pin out? it looks like you use a screwdriver and i tryed that but it wont budg i just dont want to heat it and mess it up.

You need to stop before ya do some real damage & ask some questions......
If you are referring to the large lower pin that holds the gimbal ring in place you are going about it all wrong.....
Put the cotter pin back in & leave it alone....
If you break the transom shield where that pin fits into you will be sorry........
You have the bell housing that is held in place with hinge pins that have small keeper pins?.....
You need to pull them out & get the hinge pins out for acess to the bellows.....​

thats all i did was take the cotter pin out. so the bellhousing just needs to come out/ is that easier and better to do?

I guess the first thing to do is everyone use the correct terminology for the parts. You don't have to pull a gimbal housing (aka transom shield) to change a bellows. You do have to pull the bellhousing (aka pivot housing by some).

Thanks for the pic Don.....
You need to remove the bell housing, the hinge pins are located just to the right of the arrow that points to the gimbal housing, one on each side......
The one pictured is the newer style where the trim senders cover the hinge pins.....
The older style will not.....
Which style do you have?......​

thats all i did was take the cotter pin out. so the bellhousing just needs to come out/ is that easier and better to do?

It's the only way to do it......

mine has the trim senders covering the pins. im getting ready to pull the motor today once thats out ill just take the gimble housing out in one piece and work on it on the bench. i have an exhaust leak in the tube thats why im taking the motor out and since i was doing that i fugiured i would check other things and address them at the same time if need to be. thanks for all the replys im sure ill have more questions through the winter.

I don't reccomend that......
Leave the gimbal housing on the boat, it will be much easier in the long run......
Since you have the newer style hinge pins, they are torqued to well over 100# & have loctite on them, they will be very difficult to loosen off of the boat....
The y pipe can be inspected & disassembled with it still intact once you remove the engine.....

ok ill do that way first. thats where it is leaking is at the y down at the bottom. this boat runs and rides great its just the previous owner had a stroke and it sat for awhile. i spent all last summer using it and fixing minor things and this summer using it more but a couple of months ago i left it in the water for the weekend and found the leak once that is done and new trim senders and boots i should be good to go.

Just trying to make it as easy as possible for ya.....
I have an 888 so they are similar......
I have a new 351W going in to replace my old 302 this winter.....
I have seen NOS on ebay for the old style inboard risers that go straight out (not elbow), ya might wanna look before you go to brand new center rise, unless the mans are shot.......​

just got the motor out and wouldnt ya know it the ypipe on the starboard side wasnt even bolted up. thanks haut i will be looking around and asking questions before i make a permanent desicion on it. if i do change is there anything i need to do about the water for the exhaust. a guy told me i need to run an extra pipe to the exhaust to it isnt a dry system. im not sure what he meant when all i would be doing is rerouting it from the oudrive to the hull. i dont know im still looking around. this is all new to me i have knowlage about motors cause i use to buld cars but learning on the boating mechanics part.
