Exhaust baffle question

I have a thru hull exhaust and from the riser to tip there is a piece of pipe with a bunch of baffles all at different angles. Are they to make the exhaust a little quieter or to stop water from flowing into the motor. The reason I ask is because one pipe is a little crappy and I was going to replace both with a regular piece of exhaust pipe with no baffles.

Sounds like a muffler to me. Is the pipe diameter significantly larger on the outside compared to the inside?
You can replace that with a piece of straight pipe. Very important that you keep the flappers on the exhaust tips though.

Ayuh,... It sounds like a muffler,... You still need Flappers/ Shutters, straight or muffled...
