I have found that the Tempo style and other muffs with the rectangular cups don't fit as well as they used to, I also think that the rubber is stiffer than it used to be, I found the best ones are the Mercruiser/Quicksilver round ones with the metal rod clamp.
Also something else you can do if your boat has been sitting on land a long time to get the pump to prime right away.....
Hook up your muffs and turn on the water.
Go up to the front of the engine and disconnect the raw water intake hose at the thermostat housing. Fill this hose with water and re-connect it. This will put water right in the impeller housing. Then start up. I do this every time the boat has sat on land for more than a week or 2 and you get water out of the exhaust housing right away.

This is a great idea thank you. I'm assuming this is the hose to disconnect and fill with water?

If that goes back to the transom mount yes. Looks like it connects to the power steering cooler then should go back to the transom mount behind the engine
Ford 2.3 liter OHC engine right?
Those were used in all kinds of small Fords throughout the 70s and 80s

I'll have to verify if it goes back to the transom mount, but yes connects to the power steering cooler. Will have to double check when I leave the office and get back home.
Correct its a 2.3 liter OHC
My boat is a 1987

if you have a lot of water by-passing your muffs get these....
the rubber is softer and conforms to the shape of the lower unit better than the harder rubber Tempo and other ones using the rectangular muffs.

Ok verified that hose goes to the transom. Flushed water through all the lines to make sure clean water was coming out. Then I noticed when I pulled the water pump off I think I dropped the vent tube down the hole. Does anyone know where that goes? And if it’s going to interfere with anything down there. I also picked up a set of those muffs and they are way better than the ones I have.

It won't interfere with anything. I would still put a vent hose on the new one though

Thanks Bruce, I was able to see it with a mini inspection camera and surprisingly was able to fish it out using a small grabber tool. I will put a new one on for sure.
