From what I hear, the exhaust boot (or tube) is far easier to install than the bellow. The only side effect is louder exhaust which isn't an issue for me.

May I ask, what is a exhaust boot? How does it work? I might be doing a bellows job this spring, and if the boot is easier, I may just do that.

Ayuh,... When you look up yer Parts, you'll see exhaust Bellows, which attach at both ends,...
And,..
The exhaust Tube, which only attachs to the boat side....

You do tend to get more exhaust residue on the transom with a tube vs bellows

though its easier, its still apita. if you change the bellow, go ahead and change your gimbals while you in there. also check shift bellow. if ones dry/cracked its likely the other is too.

My marina did the same thing....replaced my "bellows" with the "tube", without telling/asking me about it......and I was fairly annoyed, because of the considerable noise increase. I actually paid my mobile mechanic to throw-out the tube, and put a bellows back on.
I don't like the extra exhaust noise on my small cruiser.

So this is what I may have on my boat!! It's a 2000 Bayliner 2452, 5.0L AlphaII. I just bought this in Sept./2010 and learning something new every day about it.
Last week when I was out running up the boat I noticed that the exhaust was bubbling up between the outdrive and transom only?? I thought it should come out the prop. (unless I am even wrong about that) I was thinking that I may have a bellows problem, but now I am not sure? But if I had a boot then this would explain it.

Someone asked is it easier to install the boot. Yes a lot easier.
I have one and I like the extra sound myself, I wish my exhaust was louder unlike Brentathon.

Ayuh,... That's from the idle relief ports on each side of the transom...
Once the boat is underway, most of it goes through the prop...

I certainly wouldn't use the term "a lot". The sound only changed on my boat when I trimmed it out, and the boot came away from the drive. That was also the way that you could tell when my boat was "optimally" trimmed for cruising speeds.

Are these boots avail for 280 volvos?...or just mercruisers?
No, you should be using the boot on the Volvo 270 thru 290 outdrives. The flappers at the exhaust outlet help minimize reversion so you need the boot to direct the exhaust through the outdrive on this design.
