I bought a pontoon and it came with an '80 80HP Mercury 800 2-stroke 4-cyl. It's always able to start although it takes a good amount of starts before it runs. When it's idling, it runs rough. I initially thought this was a carb problem so I rebuilt and re-adjusted the carbs and idle screws. It can now go all the way through to WOT in the water. At this point I've replaced the battery, spark plug cables, spark plugs, and carb gaskets/floats/needles. But she still idles rough, and at higher RPMs (I'll get you a number when the gauge comes in), and sounds like she misses irregularly both in and out of gear.
Well last time I had the carb cover off I noticed that when I turned off the engine there would be exhaust coming out of the carbs. Is this, as well as the rough idle, indicative of faulty reeds?
Before you answer that question, I purchased the service manual from Mercury and thought to start with the electrical side of the engine since I'd already done some work on the fuel side. The trigger assembly Ohm'd out perfectly but the stator has me a bit worried. Per the manual the values should be as follows:
(To switch box)
Blue to Blue/wht = 5700-8000 Ohms actual value = 6200 Ohms Good
Blue to Engine Gnd = O.L. actual value = 10.3 MOhms Probably ok
Red to Gnd = O.L. actual value = O.L. Good
Red to Red/wht = 56-76 Ohms actual value = 153 Probably not good
(To rectifier)
Yellow to yellow = .3
yellow 1 to red = .3
yellow 2 to red = .3 actual value for all three was in the KiloOhms
The Rectifier also Ohm'd out bad. Now common sense tells me to just replace the stator but i wanted to get some more experienced advice before I went out and bought a $200 replacement stator which may not be an issue at all.
