I hope this is a quick fix. I have exhaust coming out of my pee hole on my 90 hp Merc. i have the unit submerged in a trash can and water is cover the exhaust vents, instead of using bunny ears, i started her up and instead of water it was exhaust shooting out of the pee hole instead of water. Is this supposed to be happening or do i need to replace the pump/and or impellar?

That should not happen, sounds like you need some major engine service. Dont run it anymore, if theres no water coming out. Coudl have a cracked engine or blown head gasket or something like that. I would take it to a pro to get looked at.

That's not exhaust. That's steam. Motor is severely overheated. If it has done this for more than 10 seconds or so I'd say you could very well have internal engine damage.

Not an expert by any means but...definitely overheating.

i was told it was fine if some exaust comes out the pee hole BEFORE the water does that is, but its NOT ok if no water is coming out

Guessing that this is not a newer engine and that the tube for the pee hole comes from the top of the exhaust cover on the left side of the engine looking from the back (spark plugs), you should not have exhaust comming out the pee hole. That would indicate a bad set of exhaust cover gaskets and possibly a warped exhaust baffle. That's the only place that exhaust can enter the water that comes out of the pee hole. Steam would not likely occur at the pee hole because that would mean that your engine had reached temps that would create a whole host of other symptoms that you did not mention. However, this is a Merc and its not sitting in front of me so anything is possible.

Oh Shoot, there is another possibility and that's the poppet valve. Before you pull the exhaust cover pull the thermostat cover and check the poppet valve and the thermostat cover gasket.

It's amazing how a morning shower can clear your mind.. LOL:D

really? i was told that when you first start an engine the exaust travels down the driveshaft housing correct? thats also where the water flow from the overflow on the block travels down, i was told when you first start your engine exaust simply will travel up the overflow and you will see it coming out of the telltale the short time period before the water begins to exit, i have the same problem on my 9.8 hp, and was told to take a semple of the teltale water and if it was clear, not cloudy or contain any sign of exaust (ie oil) then i was good 2 go

It's quite possible that your engine works this way but if this engine is a late 80's mid 90's 4 cylinder engine as I suspect this is then no it shouldn't happen. If it was normal, then all of them would do it and they all don't.

I understand what you describe. That might happen if the exhaust tube gasket at the bottom of the Exhaust tube was shot or if your forgot to put silicon sealant at the rear of the waterpump base plate or possibly a split water tube to waterpump outlet connector. Also if the upper exhaust plate gasket is blown. Exhaust plate meaning the plate between the powerhead and the lower housing. It's not rare to have this happen but it's usually due to some serious backfiring. Exhaust cover gaskets can blow for the same reason but more often its from overheating or from an extremely lean situation where the exhaust gases become superheated.

So as to this being normal. No, I don't think Yamaha/Merc/Tohatsu or whoever was designing at the time, planned it that way.

This is an older one, it is an '85, i think i am going to have to break down and take it in to a pro. Does anyone know what the "average" would be for someone troubleshooting the engine?

Re: exhaust coming out of the "pee" hole

yeah i have a 1970 110 (9.8hp)and it has no thermostat controll (free water flow) and i thought i had a bad exaust gasket so i replaced all gaskets on the powerhead, water system was fine did a tube test for leaks and all the good stuff.... turns out that was the problem well not necesarily a problem just a little exaust came out before the water would exit the pee hole this probably did happen on the smaller horsepower engines pre-1980 the main thing was the was no exaust or oil in the water which means the exaust passage is sealed from the water passage... i guess the exaust would travel up the water overflow on the engine because when in the water the exaust is under pressure (backpressure) and there is a lower pressure up though the water exit on the block so the exaust will simply travel up here untill water begins to exit

That makes me feel a little better. I am looking to put my money into restoring the boat, not the motor..
