I have a 1980's Merc 7.5. It is not peeing. I also noticed that exhaust was coming out the pee hole. My first thought was that the water pump is toast and that I should replace it. I'm a little curious why I would be getting exhaust coming out the pee hole though. Anybody have any ideas?

Have you recently serviced this motor? Is water coming out of some other place that it's not supposed to? It could be your water pick up tube grommet is either cracked very badly or missing, or the pick up tube itself is fractured. I would think you would still get a little water out the tell tale though. It would also be strange for this to happen all at once. Good luck. :)

The motor hasn't been serviced recently, but, it had been sitting unused for about 2 years.

wippel, I think if you drop the lower unit, the cause will be readily apparent. There is only one way for exhaust gasses to get in there and that's the water pick up tube. Drop the L/U and take a look. Let us know what you find. :)

Re: Exhaust Coming Out Tell Tale

I have a similar situation with an 85hp mercury 850. I just got the motor and had the water pump impeller replaced. Ran it from the shop to my dock, which is about 5 miles with a stream coming out the tell tale. Started it after about 45 minutes and no stream, but smoke? steam? coming from the tell tale. It appeared to me to be same as the exhaust smoke. Mechanic that replaced the water pump impeller said I probably picked up weed or grass and to run a wire up the tell tale which I did. No change, no stream. I blew air via compressor in the tell tale. No stream. I removed the tell tale hose and blew air into the tell tale outlet at the head and got a stream temporarily, for about 10-15 seconds, then it stopped. I hesitate to run the engine long without stream from the tell tale for fear of overheating it. I suspect the water pump is working. From the other post it sounds like exhaust may be entering the telltale tube. What to do?????
