Exhaust Flapper Dilemma

I am looking for some opinions/advice on the exhaust flappers on my 1998 5.7 GSI with an SX Drive.

I have removed the risers for inspection and also wanted to check on the flappers. From what I can tell, the flappers appear to be in good condition but they do have a little resistance when I rotate them.

Looking at previous posts, I see that Volvo stopped using them in 1999 and recommends not replacing them.

I am trying to decide if I should clean them up so they rotate freely and leave them in place or just remove them per Volvo to eliminate any future problems if they fail.

I am a little nervous about removing them but I also don't want to have to worry about having them fail and cause other problems.

Looking through the forum, I see posts from people having problems when the flappers fail. Has anyone had or heard any problems caused by not having the flappers installed?

Dave.

Re: Exhaust Flapper Dilemma

I think it depends on the height of the risers to the static waterline. If it was me i would be taking them out. Some resistance can also lead to failure. Then you will be taking the risers off and also chasing debris into the drive exhaust.Even if you wanted to replace them i doubt you could get them.

Thanks for the feedback. What should the minimum height of the risers to the static waterline be and where do you measure to on the riser?

iBoats replaced marinepartsexpress with **** on purpose since marinepartsexpress is a competitor. They do it with a few sites.
