Re: exhaust flapper

I've owned a few late 60's era Mercruiser 120's with the 4 cylinder Chevy engine, and worked on a couple of 70's era mercruisers with either a Chevy V-8 or a Ford 351 V-8, a 2 with the in-line Chevy 6 cyl. I've never seen a exhaust flapper on any of them.

If you're not going very fast in Rev. I can't think of what they'd be needed for.

Re: exhaust flapper

If they exist on your model, they would be at the base of the Y exhaust pipe that goes to the transom shield. Similar to the picture below.

Get a set of flappers and install them. They are cheap and easy to install and could prevent catastrophe to the motor. They prevent water from reversing through the exhaust system and into the motor. They do wearout and corrode off and do need servicing and replacing. Many here choose to run without them but I would NEVER!! Re: exhaust flapper

I have an 1974 888 Mercruiser with a 302 Ford and do not have any flappers at the top of the Y-pipe either. Are they located at the base on my model as well? That may be the exhaust restriction I am getting.....a stuck flapper.
