Exhaust location on the sx-st oudrive

94 3.0 GL MMDA with SX-ST stern drive. Where exactly is the exhaust and water return on this unit? Bellows only? Bellows and prop area? Only diagram I have found indicates both. Not sure if diagram is for open systems, closed systems or both. Need clarification please.

Exhaust thru hub only. Not sure what water return is. Do you mean intake ?

Water is mixed with water as it exits the riser so both exit same path. Besides through the prop, exhaust and water can also exit the relief ports at the bottom of the transom assembly.

Yes, but I think its solved. Old pieces of impeller in exhaust. Getting ready to test and don't like muffs. Would prefer to submerge water intake in tank and keep tank full with fresh water. Used to do that with my 70's volvo and worked great. Cant do that with this model as exhaust would heat water in tank.

You don't want to do that with this drive and you shouldn't have done it with your old Volvo either unless the tank allows the level of the water to be higher than the impeller on the front of the engine which you can never do unless you back the trailer into the tank.
