Volvo AQ-131 engine, 4 banger..

Winterizing, and I've heard that there may be a plug that drains the exhaust manifold.

This true? (I still don't have the book, it's a 1986).......

Seems it had a downward slant already but please correct me if i'm wrong, do I need to find a plug and drain it from residual water?

Thanks,

Re: Exhaust manifold drain?

You should have a plug on the underside at the front or back. This was the first year I drained mine out, and found that I had to push a small screw drive in the hole because it was full of dirt and crap before it would drain like it should.

Get your wifes make-up mirror to help see under those hard to see places. If you don't allready have a wife "DO NOT" go out and get one for this job.Go to the store and buy yourself your own mirror.

Instead of getting either a new wife or buying a make up mirror, get one of those mirrors that rotates on a telescoping handle (kinda like a car antenna) for around $2 at your local Wal Mart.

Re: Exhaust manifold drain?

I have the mirror! Don't need the wife! :D

OK ON this same question then guys - Here's the deal -

I have a prop that LOOKS like the factory prop.....it's banged up pretty good but I filed it and tapped it and it's functional although I am going to replace it - YET the owner told me I may need to get a smaller pitched prop (Or was it higher?).

The boat runs WTO at 3200 rpm.....so I'm thinking OK He put a smaller pitched prop on so he could troll, but yet he had a kicker motor mount put on.

I also hear a sound, and it DOES sound like my alternator bearing, plus the alternator looks to be a car alternator - no screens.....and the belt is super loose......

But now I'm hearing that if the manifold went TU and leaked into #4 cylinder that I could have some big problems on my hand.

Also the boat doesn't like to accelerate quickly, now that COULD just be the accelerator pump and the left overs of the 2 year old gas......

But hte more I ran the boat last time I had it out the better it ran, in fact it ran quite nice when warmed up and driven for a while (Fresh gas, cleaner, HEET etc)...

But does this symptom sound like perhaps I'm losing pressur ein one cylinder?

I'm going to do the compression test tonight, been waiting for the rain to clear......I k now it's the only true method to determine this but man this could be ugly if it is a bad cylinder......

Thanks,

Here she is....my new wife!

Re: Exhaust manifold drain?

Scott, 3200 is way under what the w.o.t. #'s should be.......Either your prop is way off in size or you have other issues, or both.....What is the diameter & pitch of the prop you have now?.....A compression test and a vacuum test would be helpful now....We are sure that all of our ignition components are operating correctly?....JK

Re: Exhaust manifold drain?

Someone put an electronic ignition in this, it has no points in it.
I just put a new distributor cap in, runs better than it did before......

Otherwise I'm not sure of the timing, or that noise I hear so until I isolate the noise I'm kind of unsure whether I should tear into it....

I'll definitely do the compression test first, don't have a vacuum meter of any kind though.....

Re: Exhaust manifold drain?

You should go get one ....They are cheap & they can tell you alot about your engine, esp. valve train....You might want to start another thread, with your new questions....One here & one in the prop forum for your prop size questions.....JK

Re: Exhaust manifold drain?

Went home at l unch and pulled the covers off the boat, so I can get it dried out (WE've had some serious rain lately) and can check that stuff out tonight.

Turns out my prop definitely is a suspect, that sucker is very low pitched (ie lower top end)......it's not the same pa int as the outdrive and is definitely aftermarket.

But I'm still going to do my other stuff 2nite.

Back to the original question, in the rear of the exhaust manifold hanging down was a plug, appears to be the drain - anyone know off top of their head what tool is used to get that opened?
Could not see under there (Everything is still very wet and my covers were not on right).

Thanks!

Re: Exhaust manifold drain?

If that drain is similar to the one on the AQ125 I just drained it today and used a socket. Couldn't find anything to fit but remembered I had a multi-size one, capable of fitting on different sized bolts. Its one of those gimmic tools but this is the first time I found a use for it.

Nice looking Bayliner, looks like the 1985 era Capri 1950 Bowrider that I have?

Re: Exhaust manifold drain?

Take the prop off and look for some numbers something like 14x17r.That will be your diameter and pitch.Next find out what your W.O.T max RPM should be.If your motor is a AQ131A,B,C orD then your max RPM is 5000.If you arent getting close to 5000 then your pitch needs to drop down.If your going over the 5000 then you need to go higher.

Re: Exhaust manifold drain?

Also wanted to mention that if you seem to have mucho vibration it may be the file and tap job throwing it off balance.OK for a spare but not good for your outdrive.

Re: Exhaust manifold drain?

The prop is a 14x21 and a new 14x17 is enroute. :)

My WOT should be 4800-5000 and the numbers say the 14x17 should do the trick :)

The old prop - It's tore up pretty bad and it's heading to the scrap yard! I think if I need a spare I'll buy another new one...

Yep, close anyway - that's a 1986 19' Bayliner Capri ...

Thanks!
