I see many people replacing their exhaust manifolds and risers. What is the reason for this and how do you know when it's time to do so? I have a 3.7 4 cylinder so it obviously only has one of each. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Exhaust Manifold & Riser Replacement

Deterioration of the mating surface between the manifold and riser/elbow is the primary reason. . . . this is due to rust, water exposure, etc

Once the mating surfaces become too narrow leaking of the water jacket into the exhaust chamber and eventually inside the cylinders can/does occur. Only bad things can happen from there.

It is good to inspect the joint every few years and re-assembly using a new (OEM style) gasket .

Re: Exhaust Manifold & Riser Replacement

Elbows and manifolds also rust out... One of the things we're seeing a lot of at the moment is a one piece manifold system used by Merc on some late 90s V6s... We call them 'batwings', or 'engine killers'... They are now at an age where they're failing, and taking engines with them.......
