Wondering if anyone could tell me why this exhaust opening is caped off. It is a 79 omc stringer 400. werent the 400 stringers only made for the 120 & 140 hp 4 cyl.

The stringer 400 was only for the 4cyl, however they do interchange and therefore yours is capped and can be used with a 6 or 8 cylinder 800 model.

I'm confused my leg on the outside says omc 400 on the top. does this mean that the intermediate housing is from an 800 and the upper and lower are a 400. Just curious. May be I can put a bigger motor in her if I dont have to replace the outdrive:D.

The only real difference, other than gear ratio, is the lower case and gear set. I currently have a 400 upper bolted to my 800 lower while my 800 is on my bench getting a once over. I used the 400 lower last year for 2 days before I shredded it, but you could use it if you wanted to. I'm not sure if the 400 intermediate is different, but I do know the 78+ units all interchange with the exception of the 400 lower, and possibly bellhousing differences.
