The question I need an answer to is were are the exhaust scupper (i think there called that). The part that keeps the fresh water from coming back up the exhaust when slowing down. Looked on the net and they should be just bellow the risers in the exhaust exit tube. This exhaust system seems to not have them or a place they should be. The exhaust exits the boat through the leg and out the propeller.

Maybe this system does not require them and if so can some one tell me why.

We are still trying to figure out how the engine got flooded with salt water.

Thank you

Re: Exhaust question

Volvo stopped using the exhaust flappers in 1999. Here is the service bulletin explaining why.

What was going on prior to your having water in the cylinders?

Re: Exhaust question

this happened to me as well. removed spark plugs, turned the engine over, new plugs, now it runs like a champ. It seems like defective design to me, water in cylinder head=no good. In my mind (consumer) I dont think I should hesitate from planing speed to neutral because of bad design. I was contemplating thru hull exhaust until I saw the 1500 price tag. Guess its just part of it.

Its not my boat but a good Friend that I am trying to help.

Not %100 sure what happened but he said he started to have a minor miss and then he slowed down for the brake water and at that point the engine stalled out. He tried to start it and it was hard to crank with no start. when I got to the engine the first thing I did was pull all the spark plugs and water came out of #1 and #6 cylinders. Tried to crank engine again but no crank and lots of water coming out of the plug holes.

We now have the new engine and have it almost installed but still not sure why or how the water got into the cylinders.

thank you as it seemed strange that there were no exhaust flappers any advice would be appreciated.
