5.7 L Alpha One, year 1991, engine serial # OD521897

Need to replace exhaust shutters. Merc OEM Manual #15 says to remove EXHAUST PIPE ELBOW and EXHAUST HOSE, then replace shutters.

Anyone know: 1. Can I remove the EXHAUST PIPE ELBOW without removing the EXHAUST ELBOW that sits on top of the exhaust manifold?
2. Can I do the whole job by trying to slide the lower rubber coupling/s down without removing the EXHAUST PIPE ELBOW at all?

I've got cast iron exhaust elbows, no risers and the exhaust pipe elbow is also cast iron.

Searched the forum and found one post where member said you could slide the lower rubber coupling/s down but this was on a 4.3 L engine I believe.

Appreciate any help, would like to leave the exhaust elbows alone if I don't have to mess with them. Will pull these when I replace the manifolds later.

Hopefully the shutters are in place and not in the Y-Pipe but I'll find that out later when things are apart. Recently did a shift cable and didn't see anything in exhaust bellows but wasn't consciously looking then with this issue in mind.

Thanks,

John

Bt Doctur,

Thanks for information which is clear as to which components to remove. I'll pull the dump with the method you describe and that should expose the
shutters (hopefully still there) at the top of the y-pipe. I didn't want to get
into the exhaust elbows and gaskets there if I didn't have to.

Appreciate your help.
