Re: Expectation management

Lurking about the Starcraft forum, I see a crowd of guys that will take on just about any task with hardly a shrug--sometimes even a grin (Dozerll, Jason, B2). The expectations are that there is going to be work to do.

I learned about the importance of keeping expectations in check almost instantly. Why? How?

Simple. Budget. I feed from the bottom.

But, honestly, I use that to my advantage, seriously.

See, the boats you are shopping for right now come in a wide range of price points.

Those boats in the, oh say, $6K plus range really otta be in great shape, turn key, ready to go with little or no real investment/work involved. For me, dropping $6k is out of the question, period.

Then you have the boats that are in the $1K and under range. You guys know what these look like. Trash. Nasty, messy, rotted, rusted, mulch for transoms, trees growing out, compost for interior, yada, yada. Just a big mess. All except for that really nice alum hull. In these cases, the sub $1K buys a nice hull (that needs paint) and a solid trailer (that needs paint, tires, bearings, n' stuff). Now for me? I'm in this lower category but even more so living in the $500 or less range. Truly scraping that bottom. But, for

OK, so what's left? Well, now we are in that $1K to $6K range. This range is real tricky. There are a lot of sellers that really think their trashed boat is worth a pile of cash and in reality, it needs a total rebuild just like the sub $1K range. There will also be a bunch of boats in this range that may look good on the surface but really need to be gutted and rebuilt, again just like the sub $1K boats. But, to be fair, there are a lot of good boats in the mix that would be great finds really. But, a guy just needs to find them and do the legwork to check transom, deck, engine, trailer, on and on. Either way, for me, doesn't matter, I'm still scraping for that rock bottom $ boat.

So yah, basically, I look for boats that are trashed, fits neatly right into my boat funding. And ya know what my expectations are for that boat? Yup, it's trash. I'm never disappointed:thumb:

Good news?

Hey, we can build them back to something very special, right? Right!:joyous:

boy, is that a nice exposition of the tin-o-sphere. esp this part: that $1K to $6K range. This range is real tricky. There will also be a bunch of boats in this range that may look good on the surface but really need to be gutted and rebuilt, again just like the sub $1K boats.

just don't be in a hurry and be willing to leave your phone # and wait for things to percolate. always good if you can ensure that prospective seller's spouse knows that you are willing to offer cold cash for that eyesore she's been averting her eyes from for years.....

Re: Expectation management

LOL, quite the treatise indeed. I've got calls out on a couple in that "tricky" range that include an 8 hour drive (each way). Another in the lower part of that range that includes a 17 hour drive. I also called on the sub-$1k Holiday mentioned above. Yep, outdrive is gone and the block is cracked. Seller was emphatic about MY WIFE and I want to get rid of it :)

In other news, here in Idaho a fairly thrashed seventies 18'SS with an asking price of $4995 moved in 3 days. All you flippers should send them out here and make a killing!

Yeah Washington and Oregon are the same way with boats... Insane high prices rule the day here.

No kidding! I am having to adjust my own attitudes and thought processes. The trashed 18'SS for $4995? Sold in two days. 19'SFM for $7K, sold in 6 hours. Leaking, rivets-missing 18SS, sold to the first person to see her for full price of $5500.

Re: Expectation management

Wow, that stinks.

While our pricing here in the Midwest is pretty darn good, I must say, it seems over the past few years the older alum boat market seems to have thinned some.

Course, I know some kanucks are swiping them, smuggling them over the boarder, and then hoarding them:mad-new:

it's a plot, i tells ya....bet they're in league with the Illuminati

cloudrnnr, i'd a thunk the aviation background would have prepared you for expensive aluminum. ;) i know the cost of a road trip is not insubstantial, but if you have the time, those prices make even 5-800 to go get a boat seem reasonable.

Re: Expectation management

I have the time :) I'm looking long distance at a 20' Holiday that would make a great open bow conversion, as well as a 19.5' Sea Nymph that is configured the way I want, but a little underpowered. Both require road trips, so it is just a matter of timing the weather.

Re: Expectation management

I hear ya on those rotton kanucks:mad2:

Hey, yah know, that 20' Holiday might be the best bang for the buck of the 3 you posted. Course, if the engine is toast it's no doubt over priced. If it checks out, I'd think that would be a fair deal. Looks like you could run it for a few years till you decide to go the rebuild route.

All the best!:thumb:

Edit: Careful, that one is kinda close to Glen, aaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!:mad-new::eek::nono:

Rob, I saw those. The greenie is looking more appealing all the time. Just about anything will be an open bow conversion, so the split windscreen is helpful. There is also this inboard that could be a player. The convertible top with a curtain would be helpful...

Yep ^^^ best of the bunch.

Although I do like the prices for the 2 Waterman just posted, w/ much older vintage Mercs, they may not be good choices, and I like vintage Mercs.....

Re: Expectation management

and in other news, the boat shed continues to come together. Looks like the doors will cost well more than any of the boats I've been looking at

As a matter of fact, the Admiral's quilting group has already staked it out as a possible venue!
