Exposed Aluminum Bad?

In my bilge, the battery platform. I noticed paint is peeling off there. Under the paint is this white substance. I thought maybe I should scrub off all the loose paint and paint over it with something, or even Line-X it.

Or is it fine the way it is?

Either aluminum oxide or whatever compound results when sulfuric acid hits aluminum. If it's the latter, it can be a sign the aluminum is being eaten right through.

Well that's not good.


To my knowledge, no battery has leaked. But I've only owned the boat for less than 2 months.

It may just be the aluminum oxidizing. Aluminum is not like iron. Once a layer of oxidation forms on aluminum, that layer prevents further oxidation. It won't rust through like steel.

That said, like NYbo said - make sure it isn't acid leaking because that WILL eat through.

Is the battery in a box? Could you fit one in there? If it were me and I could fit a battery box in there, I would. That way if a little acid leaks out it ends up in the box, instead of the hull/floor.

I actually have 2 batteries. They are in individual trays. There is room for boxes though.
