I am looking at a four stroke outboard motor. I am trying to decide on a EFI motor that will require me to purchase a 115HP in Yamaha (smallest with EFI). I ruled our Suzuki and Honda after reading subjects here. The extended warranty is rather expensive. Are they any good, are they worth it, or are they like automobile extended warranties, usually a waste of money???
Any thoughts would be appreciated on warranty and product. Brand, EFI, HP, etc.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Sandman,

Disagree with you on auto warranties. As an auto factory rep. I can assure you the problems with them are that most customers buy one thinking it's backed by the automaker. READ, READ, READ, the paperwork.
Most cases they're not!

They (extended service policies) can save someone on a budget. Just make sure your buying one that is backed by the manufacturer. Don't believe the dealer. Call the OEM and ask them their interpretation on what your looking at.

Re: Extended Warranty Purchase

Thank you for your thoughts. I have known many people who turned out very disapointed in their automobile extended warranties. I do not know if it was with insurance company or manufacturer. I know it was pitched hard to me by car dealer as "bumper to bumper" warranty, only to read it was not true, so I passed. I may have made a mistake, but I did not have valuable insite like we have here from great people that are kind enough to share information and experience. Thanks a bunch! Hope you have a great holiday.

If you read "consumer reports" you will find that Extended Warranty's are a waste of go earned money. Take care of th engine with routine maintenance etc. & you will not have a problem (PM) Preventive Manitenance.

Re: Extended Warranty Purchase

Sandman,

I had posted on another thread about the importance of reading the policy before buying into it - and I thoroughly stand behind that.

While it's true that on an overall financial standpoint, that extended warranties are a "cash cow" for the people selling them (i.e. GE Financial) - I have yet to buy an extended waranty that hasn't paid for itself in repairs.

My '95 Chevy Blazer had all the items replaced under the extended warranty - and only cost me a minimal deductible after the manufacturer warranty was up: Water pump replaced, hood latch cable replaced, alternator & charging system replaced, transmission given major overhaul 6 months ago, and then last month was completely replaced, and who knows what else I will have to have replaced on it before my 100,000 mile extended warranty is up. I've got 18,000 miles to go. (and I'm crossing my fingers).

As with any major $$ - research who's got a track record for a good product the first time around - as well as who can actually perform repairs to a standard that will keep you pleased as a customer.

G'Luck!
Rex S

Re: Extended Warranty Purchase

Mercury administers their own extended warranty program that is far superior to any 3rd party warranty I have seen. It is good at any Merc dealer in the US and Canada, is the least expensive and has the lowest deductible I am aware of. The 115 merc EFI 4-stroke uses the Yamaha powerhead anyway.

REX can't be telling the truth.. (Chevies don't break like that) LOL
Just couldn't resist, Rex. That Merc warantee sounds like it would be worth looking into.

I agree - looks like the merc policy would be worth a close look.

Haha... No prob... I've grown up in a Chevy family, and really haven't had much experience with the others (Dodge or Ford) - but I'd suspect with my fortune of having Murphy always looking over my shoulder to make sure that Murphy's Law is adhered to - that any newer make vehicle would do the same to me. In the meantime - I'll happily use my 3rd party policy.

Rex S
